How To

Get Involved

Ohio AmeriCorps Career Coaches Program

The AmeriCorps Career Coaches program places fresh college graduates into five Cleveland High Schools. In partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), students attending these schools will be given powerful strategies and skills that will aid them on their path to graduation and an early start on career readiness.

Goal

The goal of the Career Coach Program is to ensure that all freshmen students get the information and knowledge they need to develop and reinforce vital skills required to prepare for career and postsecondary studies. The Career Coaches Program also provides an extra layer of support to students and validates their hard work and accomplishments.

Need

CMSD students face numerous obstacles daily, and though high school can be a very rewarding experience, it can also be quite challenging. The freshman year in high school is often one of the most significant and difficult transitions in a student’s educational journey.

The 9th grade is a pivotal year for children, and it is essential that each student is provided the extra guidance and support needed to help facilitate a smooth transition.

Approach

The AmeriCorps Career Coaches program places fresh college graduates into five high schools in Cleveland. CMSD students enrolled at these schools will be given powerful strategies and skills that will aid them on their path to graduation. These freshmen students will embark on a self-discovery mission to uncover personal values, goals, and attributes that will shape decisions when choosing a career academy for the tenth grade. Students will also conduct career and college research and attend a Career Exploration Fair that allows them to anticipate the requirements and necessities for success in their desired field.

AmeriCorps Career Coaches undergo significant training and receive valuable professional development, networking as well as guidance and support with career and graduate school goals. Members serve full-time (over 1,700 hours across 11 months), and in return receive a modest living allowance, health insurance, and an Educational Award upon completion of the full-time commitment.
